Welcome

Welcome to the Gifted and Accelerated website! Here you will find information about our programs and enrichment opportunities, as well as information on identification procedures and criteria.

Waukegan Public Schools offers both gifted and accelerated program options for grades K-12.

Identification

Is Your Child Eligible for Advanced Programming? Keep an eye on your mail! If your child’s test scores qualify, a letter will be sent to you with important information about the upcoming Cognitive Abilities Test.

This testing is the next step for students interested in:

  • Project Discovery at Little Fort (for current 2nd graders)

  • The GAP Program at Lewis Middle School (for current 5th graders)

Want to learn more? Please reach out to the staff at Little Fort or Lewis Middle School, or browse their school websites for program specifics.

Early Entrance -
WPS60 follows Illinois law which specifies that, to enter kindergarten, children must be five years of age by September 1st of their kindergarten year. However, WPS60 has an acceleration policy that addresses exceptions for children whose potential and skills are in the very superior range when compared with their peers.
Application

How will I know if my child qualifies?
After the Cognitive Abilities Test takes place, a  letter from the school in which your child qualifies will be sent home inviting your child into the program.

What if my child does not qualify for services, but I think they should?
Complete this appeal form and send to the principal of the school you wish your child to attend.
