Welcome

Mission statement: The Waukegan Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing Department is designed to serve any student who is experiencing educational difficulties due to an identified hearing loss. The program supports the student by addressing the educational needs related to the hearing loss. The teacher is a resource for families and staff, providing necessary support to students for reaching their maximum potential.

Goals of the D/HH Program:

  • To identify students for whom hearing loss impacts academic progress.

  • To assist in the documentation and development of an appropriate IEP that meets the student’s educational needs.

  • To provide services to students as dictated by their IEPs.

  • To provide support to nurses and classroom teachers of students with identified hearing losses that may have a 504 plan.

  • To assist the classroom teacher and support staff in meeting the needs of students with hearing losses.

  • To educate families, students, staff, and the community concerning the nature and implications of hearing loss.

  • To assist students and their families in the maintenance of both annual audiological services, as well as the equipment identified in the IEP required for optimal education benefit.

Services:

  • Hearing/Vision screenings
  • Monitoring provided for students who failed hearing screenings
  • Consult for teachers with students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing
  • Itinerant teachers that provide resource or push in time to the mainstream
  • Self-contained classrooms in the elementary and middle school levels, resource classes for the high school level
  • Resource classes
  • Sign Language Interpreters provided for students in need
  • Paraprofessional support
  • Assisted Listening Devices if appropriate (FM Systems, Sound Field Systems) and Educational Audiology services for proper maintenance of equipment
  • Sign Language classes offered through the District for staff, families, and public
  • Full time Kindergarten for students who are DHH
  • Pre-school for students who are DHH
  • Sign Language Clubs sponsored in some of the schools
  • Community Outreach (Thanksgiving Feast, Lion's Club Lunch, Senior Center, Career Day, Fundraising events such as Magic Show)
  • Interpreting for Deaf Adults
    *Please submit requests at least one week prior to events to allow scheduling for a sign language interpreter*
