The Gifted & Accelerated Program (GAP): Slide Show
This program is housed at John R. Lewis Middle School. Students receive an advanced and accelerated curriculum in all areas. Students participate in a critical thinking skills class in sixth grade and also take two years of a foreign language in seventh and eighth grade. Students can also participate in another elective, such as band, orchestra, choir, or art. The content in each course is rigorous and designed to challenge students at the highest level.
Admission to the GAP Program:
5th-grade students that score in the top percentile on the winter NWEA MAP are offered an opportunity to take the CogAT. The CogAT is administered in early March each school year.
Applying for the GAP Program:
A student's parent, teacher, or principal may recommend or request that a child be considered for admission to the GAP Program. The district honors all requests. Applications will be available on the district website in February
Invitations to the GAP Program:
Admission to the GAP Program is offered to those students scoring in the top percentile of NWEA MAP math and reading, and the 3 sections of the CogAT assessment. Invitation letters are sent out before May 1st each year.
Middle School Honors and Accelerated Courses:
These programs allow middle school students who score in the highest percentile in reading or math assessments to take honors or accelerated courses. Courses are offered in English Language Arts, Science, Math and Social Studies. Students will be placed in class sections at their home school.
For more information about placement, contact your home school's principal.
