Waukegan Community Unit School District # 60 has been recognized with a Meritorious Budget Award (MBA) for the 2023-2024 budget year from the Association of School Business Officials International (ASBO).

Waukegan Public School’s Family and Community Engagement Department will host its districtwide Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month celebration on May 3. The theme of this year’s event is “Innovation” and it will celebrate the innovations and contributions of Asian American and Pacific Islanders (AAPI). The event will be held on Friday, May 3 beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the Jack Benny Middle School, 1401 Montesano Avenue.

Our District's Diverse Learner Department will be hosting an informational Zoom presentation later this month to educate parents on the Notice of Procedural Safeguards For Parents/Guardians of Students of With Disabilities.

The Waukegan Community Unit School District Board of Education is seeking two students to serve as Student Board Members for the 2024-2025 school year. Any student who will be a sophomore, junior, or senior next year is eligible to apply.

District 60’s new K-8 theater company, the Waukegan Performance Arts Company (WAUK-PAC), will host its first performance later this month, as it debuts its production of Roald Dahl's WIlly Wonka Jr.

Waukegan Public Schools is taking over Six Flags Great America in May and you could be joining us! Our District is hosting an opportunity for some lucky Waukegan families to enjoy a day of excitement and fun. The trip will take place on Saturday, May 11. Winners will receive free admission, parking, and a meal voucher.

District 60 families and students have until this Friday, March 29, to share their views on how to improve their school by participating in the 2023-24 statewide 5Essentials survey of school climate and learning conditions. The survey can be accessed here.

Waukegan Public Schools’ annual Middle School Music Festival is next week! The popular event will be hosted Tuesday, April 2 and Wednesday, April 3 at the Genesee Theatre in downtown Waukegan.

Waukegan Public Schools will administer the annual state-mandated Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) to all students in grades 3-8 upon our return from Spring Break. The IAR consists of two sections of English Language Arts and three sections of Mathematics. It is administered over 3-5 days. Assessment results will be shared with families in the fall.

Registration is now open for students who will be returning to Waukegan Public Schools for the 2024-2025 school year. All returning students will once again be registered through our Parent Portal.

Waukegan Public Schools will host a free meal distribution event on Monday, March 25 from at the Waukegan High School-Brookside Campus. Meals will be available between 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Families can pick up food by driving up to door 29, which is located at the back of the Brookside Campus. Families will be asked to stay in their cars, and students are not required to be present to pick up meals.

Our District recently sent out information regarding our District's new Volunteer Policy, where parents and students can volunteer at school and district events to earn credit toward fees owed. Since we announced this policy last month, we have been happy to see parents already take advantage of it.

Waukegan High School’s Environmental Club is once again hosting a community-wide tree-planting initiative to help offset the environmental impact of the school's energy consumption.

District 60’s Diverse Learner Department will host a Special Education Rights Webinar later this month discussing Behavior Intervention Plans and the purpose behind these plans. The training will be conducted by the Family Resource Center on Disabilities.

A continuation of the February 27, 2024 Regular Board of Education Meeting will be held on Monday, March 4, 2024, at 6:00 p.m. for Open Session. The February 27 meeting was recessed due to a tornado warning. The March 4 meeting will resume where the February 27 meeting was stopped. The meeting will be conducted in person in the Lincoln Center Board Room, 1201 N. Sheridan Road.

Waukegan Public Schools’ Diverse Learner Department will host a series of virtual special education training sessions as part of its Parent Advocacy Leadership (PAL) program. PAL is a free eight-week training program from the Family Resource Center on Disabilities that is designed to help parents navigate the special education process in Illinois.

We are very excited to officially unveil details of our new volunteer policy, where parents and students can volunteer at school and district events to earn credit toward fees owed. This policy revision has been in the works for a long time, and I want to thank the staff and parents who worked on the various aspects of this policy, to ensure a fair and equitable process by which our families can earn volunteer credit. Below are relevant details about this new policy.

The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) has honored Glenwood School Psychologist Ms. Shelby Thommesen with a “Those Who Excel Award.” Ms. Thommesen is one of more than 500 educators across Illinois recognized by ISBE earlier this month. She was honored with an Award of Meritorious Service in the Student Support Personnel category.

On February 20, 2024, the monthly Student Achievement and Operation Services Committee meetings will begin at 6 p.m. in the Lincoln Center Board Room, 1201 N. Sheridan Road. No formal Board action will be taken during the meetings.

Waukegan Community Unit School District # 60 schools are again participating in Professional Learning Days this school year. These days will allow for additional professional development opportunities for staff members, and will result in altered bell schedules on these days.

Waukegan Public Schools is excited to announce we will soon be rolling out a new facility scheduling and work order software. Later this summer FMX will officially replace SchoolDude. Our district-wide launch will take place in August.
